Overview
How might we rethink existing creation tools to be more accessible and approachable?
TikTok Effect House is TikTok's desktop native tool for building the effects and interactive games used in videos. My team and I rebuilt TikTok Effect House for mobile, allowing everyday users to seamlessly create right inside of TikTok.
This concept won First Place at SparkJam 2026, which focused on the theme of creation and making, through the lens of improving digital tools.
Problem Framing
Why TikTok Effect House?
New TikTok trends go viral everyday. TikTok users want to engage in these trends, but lack the equipment and setup to do so.
TikTok Effect House is complicated and time-consuming. By the time a user builds an effect, the trend starts to fade.
There is a disconnection between creating on desktop and TikTok's mobile-first audience.
Solution Highlight
Create without switching apps
Effect House lives inside the Create panel, so creating feels native and part of the existing creation tools. Users can pick a creation type, describe the idea with a prompt, and add references to guide the result.
Continue iterating with familiar tools
Users can continue iterating by prompting and refining tools from the toolbar.

Record and share, right after creating
Once the effect or interactive game is ready, users can go straight into recording videos with it and finally participate in the trends themselves! The effect can also be published and shared with the community.
Research
Understanding Effect House
Effect House is a powerful tool used to create filters, interactive games, and AR effects for TikTok. Its asset libraries and node-based visual scripting give developers creative range, but require a steep learning curve and time to master.
Considering this complexity and the limitations of a smaller interface, we could not just scale down Effect House for mobile users. We needed a new approach, one that matched the mental models users already had.

Since TikTok is a video-sharing platform, we started by examining their editing tools. We found that AI-driven interactions and prompting were already familiar to users, through features like AI video, AI image, and AI self.
Effect House was built on these established interaction patterns and user flows to ensure that the tool was familiar to existing users and stayed consistent with the product as a whole.

Design Decisions
How can we make the capabilities of Effect House clear?
It was important to make the capabilities of Effect House clear to guide users in their creations, given that it is a new tool for many users.
The final version makes these capabilities clear by displaying the range of creations with chips. It follows TikTok's existing flow that brings users straight to the tool without any configuration screens.

How can we make the tool feel familiar?
Prompting is paired with an editing toolbar for further iterations, which is the same tool found in TikTok's standard video editor.

How can we make hidden progress visible?
AI tools cannot guarantee the same instant feedback that many of TikTok's interactions do, especially when a prompt requires many visual elements to be created.
Effect House makes progress visible through incorporating progress indicators, status messages, and allowing a live glimpse of the visual elements being formed.
Results & Reflections
We won 1st Place!
It was extremely rewarding seeing that all of our learning from the first week of SparkJam, filled with various design talks and workshops, pay off!

Takeaways
Keep iterating. We went through 20+ ideas before an idea clicked. There were many times when we wanted to settle to finally start our project, but we realized that having a strong idea gets you halfway there.
Seek feedback early. Ideation became easier once we started asking our mentors for input. Their feedback let us validate ideas quickly before moving on to the next steps.
Understand the existing platform. Understanding TikTok shaped our design decisions. It helped us integrate Effect House in a way that worked for users and fit the product as a whole.
